Your Complete Guide to Marin County Schools

When families relocate from San Francisco to Marin County, exceptional schools are often at the top of their priority list—and for good reason. Marin's public and private schools consistently rank among California's finest, with many earning statewide and national recognition for academic excellence, innovative programs, and engaged communities.

This comprehensive guide provides an overview of educational options throughout Marin County, organized by town and community. Whether you're exploring public school districts or considering private alternatives, you'll find the information you need to make informed decisions about your family's educational journey.

As your real estate advisor, I'm here to help you navigate not just the housing market, but the complete relocation process—including understanding school boundaries, enrollment procedures, and community characteristics. When we tour homes together, we can discuss which schools serve specific properties and neighborhoods.

Understanding School Information and Resources

Several valuable resources can help you research and compare schools throughout Marin County:

Key Educational Resources

Important Note: School districts, attendance boundaries, enrollment policies, and programs can change over time. While this guide provides current information, I always recommend confirming specific school assignments and policies directly with the relevant school district for any property you're seriously considering.

A Balanced Perspective on School Selection

While test scores and rankings provide useful data points, they tell only part of the story. Throughout my years helping families relocate to Marin, I've learned that the "right" school depends on many factors beyond numerical ratings—including teaching philosophy, class size, extracurricular offerings, community culture, and individual student needs.

Many parents have shared that their children flourished in schools that may not top the rankings, finding supportive environments where their specific strengths could develop. Marin offers an impressive variety of educational approaches, and part of my role is helping you identify the options that align best with your family's values and your children's learning styles.

Understanding High School Attendance Areas

Marin County's public high school system is organized regionally, with different communities feeding into specific high schools. Understanding these patterns can help you identify neighborhoods that align with your preferred high school options.

Southern and Central Marin High Schools

The Tamalpais Union High School District serves most of central and southern Marin through three main campuses: Tamalpais High School, Redwood High School, and Archie Williams High School. Interdistrict transfers within this three-school system are more commonly granted than transfers to high schools in other parts of Marin, though availability depends on capacity and individual circumstances. Learn more about transfer policies here.

San Rafael Area High Schools

San Rafael neighborhoods are served primarily by two school district systems. The Miller Creek School District serves many northeastern San Rafael and Terra Linda area families from transitional kindergarten through 8th grade, with students typically continuing to Terra Linda High School (part of San Rafael City Schools). The San Rafael City Schools system serves other areas of San Rafael. Because boundaries can be complex and may vary within neighborhoods, always confirm the school assignment for any specific property address you're considering.

The Miller Creek School District enrolls approximately 2,000 students across four schools: Lucas Valley Elementary, Vallecito Elementary, Mary E. Silveira Elementary, and Miller Creek Middle School. Average class sizes are approximately 22 students in kindergarten through third grade, 25 students in fourth and fifth grades, and 26-30 students in middle school.

Novato Area High Schools

The Novato Unified School District operates San Marin High School and Novato High School. Families can use the district's interactive boundary map tool to determine which schools serve specific addresses.
